A colorful illustration shows a Native American tribe playing a game. One man has thrown a spear to slide along the ground in chase of a rolling ring, and another man prepares to do the same. Onlookers watch from all sides.
This illustration depicts the sport chunkey, a Native American game played primarily among southeastern tribes from as early as the 7th century to the 19th century AD. The sport had many variations among different tribes, but the common elements involved rolling a stone wheel and attempting to land a spear near where it would stop.
